Tribute to Marwan 4: Optima Box art

My next tribute to Marwan's repro art: the Optima box art.
This is my first optima box art paintjob. I wanted to be experienced enough to be able to succeed this epic paintscheme...

Actually I finished the body several weeks ago but hadn't enough spare time to finish the tires markings... You guess how time consuming this tasks is :-s

I guess all optimaniacs know that the optima box art is very difficult, because the color layers are multiple and the '5' is lacking in the official decal sheet, not to mention the stripe lines work, the driver (not a lot of documentation here)...

All in all, I had a very long work on this one (several weeks); it's not perfect, the blue is a Tamiya one and is too dark and too reddish, the lines are a bit approximative, but I tried to mimmick the box art the best I could. Next time I'll use a Kyosho calsonic blue, which will be far closer to the official vintage colour scheme.

Awesome! I can't believe I never noticed the "5" that comes on the decal sheets doesn't match the box art! In my defense I lost the original box for my Optima :( I guess now I have a reason to make some more decals... I too just got some repro bodies from Marwan and am ready to paint! Any tips?

1. good analyse of the box art

2. use good masking tapes (tamiya is not the best manufacturer for masking tapes, but "Modelers Hitech" (on ebay) are good.

3. take your time for the successive layers (my blue colour alone was done in 4 layers, with brush). first black (B), blue (B), yellow (B) and finally white (S). Then the finishing (black matte for the rollcage on the outside). B=brush, S=spray

4. it's a good thing to have several kyosho vintage decals sets because the box art optima uses a lot of decals from other cars.

Thanks! I see on the back the NGK spark plugs decal that I don't have, and of course the aforementioned "5", what others aren't on the decal sheets? I am having difficulty finding any good reference box art images to work form.. Do you have any links? Or vector or raster images for the missing decals?

You can check my own scans of the 86 & 87 catalogs on this very blog. I don't have any documents more precise than those.
Besides, I used tomahawk, javelin, optima pro, mid custom, mid custom special and of course optima decals to gather the needed ones. Yet, the ngk decal on the back is my own touch ( the original is different but I did't find it and I liked the ngk logo better ).
